Bollywood hunk John Abraham's hockey team Delhi Waveriders emerged as the winners by beating Punjab Warriors in a thrilling encounter at Morabadi Stadium that bagged their maiden Hockey India League.
This final match between the two teams witnessed many dignitaries from th e country with full seating capacity. The crowd got their return for the their ticket by full on entertainment. Waveriders beat Warriors 3-1 in the shoot-out after both teams scored three goals a piece during regular play. Goalkeeper Nicolas Jacobi is the star of the night with a brilliant show of his skills.
The Delhi Waveriders bagged their maiden title and also a whooping prize money of 2.5 crore while Punjab Warriors got the half amount. Speaking on winning the title, Delhi captain Sardar Singh, said “A very close match today. For is it was to go all out but also keep our patience in place. We will enjoy the win and gear up for the next tournament.” A satisfied Head Coach, Delhi Waveriders Cedric D’Spuza said “we lost the finals last year and this time we were filled with fire and the urge to win. We had a hard match today, but we planned and executed our strategy well today. It is time to enjoy the victory”
Jamie Dywer, Captain of Jaypee Punjab Warriors said “When you lose a game in short arm its rather not very disappointing. It was a great game and we played well and gave our best shot”.
Head Coach Barry Dancer of JPW said “the team played very well today and we dominated the match for a long period of time. We somehow were not as aggressive as the opponents today. Though this was the best game of the tournament and I am proud of this team.”
