Indian captain MS Dhoni‘s name has figured in a report sent by one of the investigator of the betting and match-fixing case.
G Sampath Kumar, the then SP, Crime Branch, CID (Internal Railways) submitted a report on January 17, 2014 to the Mudgal Committee in which kingpin bookie Utham Jain, also known as Kitty, has claimed that Indian captain MS Dhoni, also the captain of Chennai Super Kings, fixed the match against Rajasthan Royals on May 12, 2013.
The report says that Utham Jain, a bookie himself since 12 years, claimed that he knew about Hotelier Vikram Aggarwal, Gurunath Meiyappan and cricket players like MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina and few other players indulging in match-fixing.
The Mudgal committee report does mention six India players that have been accused of collaborating with bookies but does not name them, saying at this stage the allegations are only allegations but investigations should be conducted. The Mudgal committee also revealed that a journalist, who was apparently connected with the recordings of tapes for a sports magazine, was able to identify the voice of the Indian player and he also revealed that the player was part of Indian team which lifted the World Cup trophy and is also a member of the team now.
"However, the journalist refused to unveil the names of the Indian players indulged in the spot-fixing. He didn't even agree to do so, even after repeated requests to put the names of the players in an envelope which will be opened before the Supreme Court panel. He seemed to be terrified and reluctant. He pleaded us that it will be dangerous for his if he reveals the name of the players," said the panel report.
“It thus appears that names of six prominent Indian capped players are available in tapes in connection with dealings with bookies while two of these prominent Indian capped players have also been named by none other than a former President of BCCI,” the report said.
